Passport
A valid passport is the foundation of your journey to the University of Saskatchewan. Here is what you need to know to manage it confidently.
What Your Passport Is Used For
Your passport is your primary identity document in Canada. You’ll need it for:
- Applying for a study permit
- Entering Canada
- Opening a bank account
- Completing SIN applications
- Completing medical exams
- Travelling outside Canada
- Extending your study permit or TRV
If your passport expires, your (and your accompanying family members') immigration documents may also expire — so keeping it valid is essential.
It is every student's responsibility to keep your passport valid and renew it on time.
Make sure your passport is valid for the entire length of your program.
If your passport expires early:
- Your study permit may be issued only until your passport’s expiry date
- You may need to extend your study permit after renewing your passport
- You may face delays in travel or immigration applications
Important: Renew your passport before applying for your study permit whenever possible.
Most international students can renew their passport through their country’s:
- Embassy
- High Commission
- Consulate
These offices are usually located in major Canadian cities such as Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, or Calgary. They provide passport services, emergency travel documents, and nationality‑specific requirements.
Some students may need to travel home to renew their passport.
Plan early - at least 12 months prior to the passport expiry date!
What to expect?
- Processing times vary by country
- Some countries require in‑person appointments
- Some allow mail‑in applications
- Fees differ depending on nationality
Important: If you renew your passport while in Canada, you must update IRCC when you apply for or extend your study permit or TRV.
Always keep:
- A digital copy stored securely
- A printed copy kept separate from your physical passport
This helps if your passport is lost or stolen.
Act quickly:
- Report the loss to local police
- Contact your embassy or consulate for replacement instructions
- Keep copies of your police report and replacement documents
- Update IRCC once you receive your new passport
Your embassy will guide you through the replacement process.
IRCC will not issue a study permit beyond your passport’s expiry date.
Example: If your program is 4 years but your passport expires in 2 years, your study permit may be issued for only 2 years. You’ll need to:
- Renew your passport
- Apply to extend your study permit
Planning ahead helps you avoid unnecessary applications.
